Short Life Summary
Nicholas John Richard Radcliffe was born and brought up in Wells. After gaining a degree in phonetics from the University of Edinburgh, he began a career in broadcast journalism with Scottish Television, where his work was marked by dedication to accuracy and a clear understanding of the power of pictures in telling a story.
In the early 1990s, Nick left STV to found Black Bear Productions, producing corporate and safety films and training organisations in crisis management and media handling. Business partner Richard Ord remembers him as a kind and generous colleague with wide-ranging knowledge of history, military affairs, news and politics.
Alongside his civilian career, Nick served in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, a specialist media unit supporting the RAF and NATO during humanitarian crises and conflicts. Commissioned into the RAF Reserves in 1994, he spent ten years training personnel in media relations and mentoring young officers,.
In April 1981, Nick married Denise Taylor, whom he met while covering a story at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Denise died in 2006.
Despite Parkinson’s disease in later years, Nick retained his sharp wit and dress sense. He is remembered for his professionalism, generosity, and service to journalism and the R.A.A.F.[200]
