Short Life Summary
Rhys Hall, as he was always known, was one of 5 children in a working-class family. He was an able child but any ambitions for higher education were thwarted by family poverty. On leaving school, he worked as a clerk for the Prudential Assurance Company. Just before war broke out, he married Joan, his boss’ daughter, and their only child, a daughter, was born in 1942. In the war he soldiered mainly in Italy but never spoke of his wartime experiences.
With Joan Rhys embraced an evangelical form of Christianity. After the war, they went to India as missionaries and spent 5 years teaching and preaching in Hyderabad state. But they were forced to return to England as the harsh climate eroded Joan’s health. Settling in Co Durham, Rhys applied to Durham University as a mature student to study Psychology. He graduated in 1959 and worked in Educational Psychology until his retirement.
He died in Edinburgh where he and Joan had settled in later life.
Rhys was a principled man who devoted his life to helping others, particularly troubled children, and to spreading his Christian beliefs. He is remembered with respect and love by those whose lives he touched. [199]
