Short Life Summary
Helen Gill Winchester, Nell, lost both her parents before she was ten years old. Neighbours, the Grant family, took Nell into their home in Macduff.
Nell approached her schoolwork with a passion to learn, particularly, English and History. Ramsay MacDonald the future Pime Minister, then the Leader of the Opposition, a native of Macduff, was a regular visitor to the Grant household, engaging Nell in conversation which had a profound effect on the direction her life was to take.
After Nell had secured work in a bakery in Banff (where she met her future husband, John, (Jackie), Shepherd, the Grant family emigrated to Canada. With the only family Nell knew leaving the town, Macduff became a lonely place.
Nell moved to Dingwall in 1936, to live in with the Shepherd family, in Seaforth Gardens, sharing a bedroom with Jackie’s sisters, securing work in a local bakery and marrying Jackie in 1938.
Deeply committed to her community, she served for many years as Secretary and Treasurer of the Ross‑Shire Labour Party. Nell enjoyed a short but happy retirement before passing peacefully on 27 March 1981.
