 Short Life Summary

Eileen McFadyen was born in Dalmuir, Clydebank eldest of the four children of James and Helen McFadyen. Helen’s father was a riveter’s holder-on in John Brown’s shipyard. Her mother was from Aberdeenshire. Her half-sister also lived with the family.  ( Jean later emigrated to Australia at age   14.) After her mother’s death from tuberculosis,  in 1922, the children went to live with their grandmother Eliza McFadyen  in Dunoon.

Eileen won a church bursary to secondary school The church also funded her studies at Notre Dame teacher training college in Glasgow where she qualified as a primary school teacher. Her first teaching post was in Oban where she met Felix Hoey. They were married in St Aloysius’ church in Glasgow on 15 May 1942. While Felix was on active service, she looked after his elderly parents. Later she nursed her own father. 

After her family of three, Eileen was able to return to teaching. She had a very successful and happy career as a primary one teacher (the infants!) in St Columba’s, Oban.

Eileen died 4 years after Felix, survived by their three children, Maureen Allan and Stephen.
