Short Life Summary
Kinn Hamilton McIntosh was the elder of the two children of Robert McIntosh and Kinn Hamilton
Her father, qualified in Scotland, practised as a GP in England, in Huddersfield and Sturry, near Canterbury.
Born in Huddersfield she was 16 when her father moved the family to Sturry. There he reamed the house which contained his surgery after his hometown. Kinn lived in ‘Invergordon’ all the rest of her life.
Contracting nephrotic syndrome in her late teens put paid to her ambition to study medicine. But she became the in-house dispenser of the medicines prescribed by Dr McIntosh until she began to make a living writing classic whodunnits. Her 29 books over nearly 60 years earned her the loyalty of readers who relished the clever plots, spare style, the interplay between her detectives and the witty one-liners.
In 2015 she won the Diamond Dagger award of the Crime Writers’ Association
She supported the Girl Guides movement, serving on committees and for 10 years chaired its Finance Committee. She was appointed MBE in 1988.
Latterly her health deteriorated but she remained in good spirits and was grateful to her friends who visited her in Invergordon and helped her carers.
